Flying Start to Festival

The third summer Bicycle Film Festival, in Edinburgh, got off to a great start tonight.

Three very different films about racing – with the emphasis on track – meshed together to produce something much more than the sum of the parts. All the films were good, but they also contained elements of similarity and contrast which made the juxtaposition fascinating.

Afterwards Donald Walker, sports editor of The Scotsman chaired a panel which included author Richard Moore, the directors of Standing Start, Finlay Pretsell and Adrian McDowall and director of Battle of the Bikes Peter Carr.

But the star turn was undoubtedly Graeme Obree who was lively, entertaining and funny – clearly in a much better frame of mind than in some of the dark times dramatised in the Flying Scotsman – shown last year.

Thursday’s opening night looks set to be cycle starry. Serial author Richard Moore will be there punting his new book – like he did in today’s Scotsman!

Star of Standing Start, Craig MacLean will be there (maybe). World travelling star Mark Beaumont is expected – so is one-hour star Graeme Obree.

Film directors Finlay Pretsell, Adrian McDowall and Peter Carr are due. Track star Chris Hoy will definitely be absent. He’s dining in Glasgow and could well pick up the “Outstanding Male Athlete” prize at the Commonwealth Sports Awards.

If you want to star too, move quickly – tickets selling fast.

Jacquie Phelan gets Ready

Pioneering Mountain Biker Jacquie Phelan is in Scotland touring around, visiting old (and new) friends and generally having fun.

‘Officially’ she’s here to present Klunkerz and Hardihood (she’s in both) but she’s also managed to help out with the new Bingham & District 50+ Cycle ‘Club’ and Friday club for younger people. One is clearly a fan.

The postie delivered a padded envelope today with not just the three films selected for EBWFF2008, but a whole lot more!

You could watch them on the internet or you could show them at your own mini film festival at your school etc. and see some truly inspirational films about exciting use of street space throughout the world.
