In the late 1960’s and early 1970’s a handful of Hippie cyclists re-invented the wheel. These early pioneers scavenged frames from dumpsters and junkyards and lifted parts from road bikes and motorcycles to build a better way down the mountain. Little did they realise that their obsessive tinkering would ultimately lead to the birth of a multi-billion dollar industry and an Olympic sport. These modified bikes, the precursor to the modern-day mountain bike, became affectionately known as Klunkerz.

Using archival footage, still photographs, and interviews, Klunkerz tells the story of the earliest days of the sport from those who were there. Some of the biggest names in the industry, as well as some more obscure characters, recount the people and events that gave birth to the modern mountain bike.
